Museopunk Monday

For one week only, Museopunk Thursday will move to a Monday. There’s still lots going on over on Museopunk.ning.com and we are now up to 63 members which is brilliant. This week:

  As of World’s Fair Use Day, the Brooklyn Museum now includes much more rights-status information in its online collection and has fully integrated this information into its API. Many Commons fans — who are often also Creative Commons fans — will appreciate this change as well, announced by Shelley Bernstein: "Lastly, we’ve taken one more baby step in the ongoing direction of opening up more content—with images and text that we own the copyright to, we’ve changed our default Creative Commons license on the site from a CC-BY-NC-ND to a CC-BY-NC, to allow for greater re-use of materials."

  The story I want to tell here is not the story of obsolete people, but that of obsolete media. Or, in Bruce Sterling’s terms, “dead media.” According to the “Whig version of technological history”, Sterling writes, “all technological developments have marched in progressive lockstep, from height to height, to produce the current exalted media landscape.” In this rush on the new, some media were rendered obsolete, other were killed, other simply died; “some media shed a few dead species, but the genus goes on living. Other media are murdered.”

  One challenge that hypergrowth cities of such density and rife entrepreneurial activity face is solving for the discoverability of its multitude of local businesses. In Hong Kong, a city vertically built-up to accommodate the tension of a growing population against limited land and space, businesses -- whether a restaurant, clothing store, hairdresser or dentist's office -- can exist in improbable spaces; for instance, on the 28th floor of a highrise, or in a nook off a small street that you'd find only if you decided to walk through a nondescript door to the back of the building.

  The cities in which we exist are vast repositories of information, endlessly collecting and storing. There is a growing movement calling for the opening up of these publicly held datasets to enable meaningful interpretation. This has been lead from a social change and transparent governance perspective with OpenData seen as a way of reengaging a sceptical populace. The potential for more innovative and novel interpretations of this landscape by creative invention, social innovation and scientific intervention is there to be explored. The opening up publicly held datasets will create enormous benefit for Manchester - its citizens, its digital community, its public bodies and its image.
