No Sleep Till Brooklyn Museum

Seems like it’s been an up-and-down weekend for Brooklyn Museum.

Three awards at the Museums and the Web 2009 conference: Best Online Community, Best Exhibition and Best Overall.

And then an announcement of cutbacks to avoid layoffs. Read the letter from Director Arnold Lehman for more detail.

The Brooklyn Plan:

  • A weeks unpaid furlough
  • Some reductions in pay
  • Voluntary buyout packages
  • A hiring freeze
  • A $2 increase in tickets prices
  • A cancellation of an exhibition
  • A closure of one of the special-exhibition galleries

I’m glad that everything is being done to limit the amount of staff cutbacks, especially a staff that wins awards for its work. Too many other museums are, in my opinion, turning to the rash option of reducing staff numbers during these tough economic times.

Whilst there is nothing I can do about a 35% decrease in their endowment, there is something I can do about the fall in membership.

Look at the cool stuff they get to do.

Go join. Copy and paste and put into your blog. Get the word out. They win awards for being ace.

Roughly around the same time, New Curator put out a similar call to action. [...]
