A Phone-Tastic View: An Xiao’s Kickstarter Project

Posted by Pete on August 14, 2009 at 2:17 am.

ArtFriday Alumni and Newcurator favourite An Xiao is using micro-philanthropy site Kickstarter (which I first looked at back in May) to fund her latest project, “Phone-tastic View”– a site-specific physical installation with a mobile phone component.

Awesome. Kickstarter rules means the money has to be raised within the timeframe or it doesn’t get any of it, so please reach deep and throw a few dollars into pot. There are also rewards for certain donations, so go have a look.

Research on urban space makes attempts to go beyond the current polarizing discussion of its future (Harlander and Kuhn 2003: 225) that, on one hand, highlights the negative aspects of downtowns' loss of civic purpose, social centrality, surveillance-free spaces, non-commercial festivities, and local cultural establishments while, on the other hand, celebrating an increase in urban diversity, urban uses, everyday appeal, and public optimism with regard to city cores (Breuer 2003b; Selle 2002).

Step 1: We broke the IMA apart into 10 different marketing categories. Step 2: We did a modified S.trenghs W.eaknesses O.pportunities T.hreats (SWOT) analysis for each. Step 3: We listed 10-20 marketing objectives for each of the categories. Step 4: We identified the target audiences for each category. Step 5: We crafted the Messages for each of the categories. Step 6: We identified available media and created strategies for implementing and integrating Messages across the channels. Step 7 (Current stage): It’s now time to take the marketing plan to our colleagues in other departments and get their feedback.

- Wikimedia Foundation projects and the museum community | conference.archimuse.com 2009/12/11
One set of issues raised frequently in discussions about museum participation in Wikimedia projects relates to rules that Wikipedia has established that were designed to prevent self-promotion, ensure articles only reference reliable sources, and establish levels of 'notability' for things that get their own article, to cite some examples. These policies are perceived to have perverse effects when the subject matter is a museum artifact with largely internally held, unpublished documentation and the editor contributing the article is an in-house expert
