ArtFriday: The Relaunch

It’s Friday

Normally, this is when I would throw the newcurator.com floor open to artists who follow me on twitter. There was method in my madness. From what I can tell about Bourriaud’s Tate Triennial show about Altermodernism, it boiled down to very simple concepts. It was stuff he liked, it was stuff made pretty recently and the artists where based all over the world. Cut through it all and Altermodernism is what I’ve been talking about on newcurator, meaning Internationalism, Presentism and Individualism. The point Bourriaud is making (I believe) is that art is very individualistic anyway, so it is time for the curator to become the focal point. The show that was the Triennial was all about Bourriaud. People lapped up what he had to say about this “new art theory”. It’s not new art theory, its a socio-philosophy been around a few years.

I’ll put it this way – as long as the art was recent and done by an international range of artists, David Beckham could have curated an exhibition and everyone would have gone crazy for it. The new art theory is there isn’t any more new art theory. You would go see the show if you had a profound respect for Bourriaud/Beckham, hopefully gaining an insight into their choices. It’s a bit like Desert Island Discs.

So I did the same. I got artists who follow me on twitter to show me what they’ve just completed and I put it on here. That was my curatorial experiment. I was very happy with the results. I was sent really wonderful things and got some great reactions.

Now, it’s time for an upgrade. ArtFriday now exists as a little “walled garden” social network. Through that, I will communicate with artists over the week to then do a better ArtFriday.

I’m being very restrictive to membership to the ArtFriday network, as in I’m validating every member. If you are an artist and want to join, email me pete(at)newcurator.com with a little bit about yourself and what kind of art you do. I don’t care what kind of art. Painting, sculpture, video, sonic,  performance as long as you can link to something I can share (Note: I can’t accept writers/poets I’m afraid. Too legally messy).

Next week expect an ArtFriday, New and Improved.
