I was introduced to Rotem Shuval’s work a couple of months back. “She’s a comic artist, you’ll like her.”
Something that a lot of comic illustrators lack is the balance between substance with style and any sense of subtlety, often going for demonstrative gestures or epic amount of photoshopping in order to make their image more interesting. I’m glad to say, Rotem’s skills lay in using her style as a medium to convey the greater purpose of the image. You’ll be surprised by how many Marvel and DC artists don’t get that. Case in point: Look at the thumbnails below. Even at that tiny size you still get a sense of the precision.
Rotem was really surprised when I put one of her sketches on the tumblr. What I saw was a very focussed bit of linework that was both captivating yet real.
I choose four images this time. The first is the sketch that first caught me. The second and third are demonstrations of her range, from stark hyper-reality to graceful colouring and textures. The forth is a self portrait because she has cool hair.
Rotem Shuval can be found at her website planetariumfish.com and twitter. I also demand you go to her shop and buy some prints.
